What you need to know about Tripletex API accounting integrations

Tripletex API connected to Chift

Tripletex is a well-known Norwegian business software offering a broad suite of tools for accounting, payroll, invoicing, time tracking, and overall financial management. It is widely adopted by SMEs and accounting firms across Norway and the Nordics.

While Tripletex covers many functional areas, this article focuses specifically on the Tripletex API’s accounting endpoints, the part of the platform that allows software vendors to access core accounting data programmatically.

If your product operates in accounting automation, cashflow management, lending, or financial analytics, integrating with Tripletex gives you access to reliable, accountant-grade financial data directly from a trusted source.

What is the Tripletex Accounting API?

The Tripletex API is a REST API that allows external applications to read, create, and update most objects within the Tripletex ERP system.

Through the API, software vendors can programmatically access a wide range of business and accounting data, including:

  • Customers and suppliers
  • Orders and invoices
  • Journal entries
  • Time tracking and hours
  • Projects and cost centers
  • Stock and inventory data

In addition to standard API access, Tripletex also provides a webhook system, enabling your application to stay synchronized in near real time. Webhooks notify your system whenever data changes occur, ensuring consistency across platforms. The delivery mechanism is designed to be reliable and guarantees delivery as long as your system is not offline for an extended period.

Technical overview

  • API type: REST API
  • Data format: JSON
  • Authentication: Token-based authentication with session handling
  • Capabilities: Read, create, and update ERP and accounting objects
  • Additional features: Webhooks for real-time data updates

While Tripletex offers APIs covering multiple ERP domains, Chift focuses specifically on the accounting-related endpoints to ensure stability, clarity, and compatibility with other accounting systems.

What can you build with a Tripletex Accounting API integration?

Once connected through Chift, Tripletex accounting data can support a wide range of use cases across finance and operations.

Sending invoice data to automate accounting entries

Allow your users to push purchase and sales invoices straight into Tripletex, making it easier to generate accounting entries automatically and significantly reduce manual processing.

By synchronizing invoices and supplier data in the background, software platforms can deliver a smoother, more reliable accounting experience with far fewer manual steps.

Keeping customer data aligned with accounting systems

Ensure customer records stay consistent between your CRM or invoicing tool and Tripletex.

This continuous synchronization helps maintain accurate client information across systems, avoiding duplicate entries and data discrepancies.

Accessing real-time AP/AR data for cashflow forecasting

Cashflow and treasury platforms can retrieve open payables and receivables from Tripletex through Chift, giving end users a clearer picture of upcoming cash movements.

This real-time visibility supports more accurate forecasting and better financial decision-making.

Evaluating loan eligibility in digital lending platforms

Lending platforms can rely on up-to-date accounting and invoicing data accessed via Chift’s Unified Accounting and Unified Invoicing APIs to assess a company’s financial situation.

This approach enables faster, data-driven credit decisions, often reducing approval times from days to just seconds.

How does the Tripletex API authentication work?

Tripletex uses a two-token authentication model, followed by a session token mechanism.

Tokens involved

  • Consumer token
    • Provided by Tripletex
    • For production, must be requested via an application form
    • Associated with the application name and configured at the consumer (backoffice) level
  • Employee token
    • Created by the end user directly in the Tripletex interface
    • Linked to the specific company or accounting firm

For test environments, Tripletex provides both tokens automatically.

Authentication flow (simplified)

  1. Combine the consumer token and employee token to generate a session token
  2. Use Basic Authentication, where:
    • Username = company identifier (optional, accountants only)
    • Password = session token

Chift handles this complexity and manages token lifecycles securely.

Best practices for integrating with the Tripletex API

To ensure a reliable and efficient integration, we recommend the following:

Handle rate limit responses properly

Tripletex enforces request limits, so make sure your application gracefully handles throttling.

Pay close attention to error codes

Each error response includes detailed information about the root cause. Use it to diagnose issues accurately.

Limit response payloads to what you need

Tripletex allows you to specify which fields to return. Requesting only required fields improves performance and reduces API load.

Use filters to minimize requests

Apply date or object filters whenever possible instead of fetching large datasets repeatedly.

Chift automatically applies many of these optimizations to keep integrations efficient.

Why connect Tripletex through Chift’s Unified Accounting API?

Building and maintaining a direct accounting integration means dealing with authentication logic, rate limits, schema mapping, and long-term maintenance.

With Chift, you benefit from:

  • A single Unified Accounting API to connect Tripletex and dozens of other accounting platforms such as Exact, Visma eAccounting, Xero, Pennylane, Quickbooks, FreeAgent.
  • Normalized accounting data models
  • Built-in authentication and error handling
  • Faster implementation and easier scalability

You integrate once and unlock Tripletex alongside the rest of the accounting ecosystem.

Tripletex API integration FAQ

What endpoints are included in the Tripletex API?

Chift’s Tripletex accounting connector gives you access to a wide range of end-points, including but not limited to:

  • Clients %%/clients%%
  • Suppliers %%/suppliers%%
  • VAT Codes %%/vat-codes%%
  • Journal Entries %%/journal/entries%%

Consult our Tripletex API documentation for a full list of available routes.

What is the Tripletex API rate limit?

Tripletex enforces a rate limit of 100 requests per 5-second period.

Once this limit is reached, all subsequent requests will return an HTTP 429 (Too Many Requests) response for the remainder of the current time window. Requests will only be accepted again once the next period begins.

To avoid hitting this limit, it’s recommended to:

  • Throttle requests appropriately
  • Use filters and field selection to reduce payload size
  • Avoid unnecessary polling

Chift automatically manages request pacing and retries to stay within these limits.
