Italy was Europe's e-invoicing pioneer, with mandatory B2B e-invoicing in place since 2019. It's also the most single-system market we surveyed: only 19% of Italian respondents use more than one accounting tool. The profession of commercialisti is highly regulated and central to SME compliance, and accounting firms effectively determine software adoption for most of their clients. For a SaaS vendor or fintech, Italy is a market organised around a few dominant software families, accessed through the accountant.
This guide pulls the Italy findings from our State of European Accounting Tech 2026 study, based on a survey of 1,400 SMEs and accountants across Europe, including 200 respondents in Italy.
Italy at a glance
- 4.2M SMEs
- 14 accounting tools named by Italian respondents
- B2B e-invoicing mandate: in place since 2019 (via the SDI platform)
- 200 survey respondents
Italy has the lowest multi-software rate of any country we surveyed, just 19% of respondents using more than one tool simultaneously, which reflects how much accounting remains a single-system, accountant-managed workflow for most Italian SMEs.
Why commercialisti control software adoption
Commercialisti handle bookkeeping, tax, payroll, statutory accounts and compliance for the large majority of Italian SMEs. Their influence over software selection is among the strongest in Europe: accounting suites in Italy are designed primarily around the accountant-firm workflow, with SME owners having limited or no direct interaction with the production systems.
As companies scale, they adopt ERP systems alongside or instead of accountant-managed tools, but the accountant channel remains dominant. For vendors, that means the route to market runs through the commercialista.
Three software families, not three products
Italy is best understood through software families rather than individual products. The market is organised around three dominant ecosystems: TeamSystem, Zucchetti and Wolters Kluwer.
- TeamSystem produces Studio (the accountant production tool), Azienda (SME accounting), Gamma (mid-market) and Alyante (larger companies). Together these account for a substantial share of the market across every segment.
- Zucchetti produces AGO Infinity, its cloud and web accountant platform, with a large installed base among commercialisti.
- Wolters Kluwer produces B.Point, its legacy on-premise accountant suite, and Genya, its cloud-native accountant platform, both targeting accounting firms.
Other accountant suites (Datev Koinos, Ranocchi GIS) serve specific niches, while ERP systems (Microsoft Business Central, Passcom / Mexal, Reviso, NetSuite) appear for larger SMEs and internationally active companies.
What this means for software vendors
External sources confirm the dominance of TeamSystem and Zucchetti as ecosystems. The main analytical caution is that product-level figures should be read as belonging to a family rather than as standalone market shares. The core takeaway holds: accountant-aligned suites dominate compliance workflows, while ERP finance systems appear more strongly as SMEs scale.
For a vendor, that has a clear implication. Connecting to "Italy" really means connecting to the TeamSystem and Zucchetti families and the Wolters Kluwer suites, plus the ERP layer for larger companies. Mapping data cleanly across multiple products inside each family, and keeping those integrations current, is a meaningful engineering commitment.
This is exactly what Chift is built to solve. One integration gives you access to a growing library of Italian and European accounting connectors, with authentication, mapping and API maintenance handled for you.
